Earlier this month, I visited a home in Kanata after the homeowner said they were getting bitten every time they tried to enjoy the backyard in the evening. They also noticed more mosquitoes gathering near the deck, around the side yard, and close to a shaded garden bed after rain.
When I arrived, it was easy to see why the problem kept coming back. This is something I often see in June around Kanata & Greater Ottawa, when warmer temperatures, early summer rain, and shaded outdoor spaces create the kind of conditions mosquitoes like.

The biggest issue with mosquitoes is that they usually are not coming from just one obvious place. In this case, the activity was being supported by a few small conditions around the property:
standing water collecting in planters and containers
damp, shaded areas near the landscaping
clogged sections of the gutter
thicker vegetation where moisture stayed longer
On a lot of properties, that combination is enough to keep mosquito activity going, especially in June when everything starts warming up and people spend more time outside.

I started by walking the property with the homeowner and pointing out the areas that were likely helping mosquito activity build up.
I checked the backyard, side yard, garden edges, low spots, and drainage areas. I also looked at the gutters, nearby containers, and the spaces where water could sit longer than expected after rain.
Once I found the likely pressure points, I explained what was contributing to the issue and what steps would help reduce activity around the home.
From there, I recommended the right mosquito service and walked the homeowner through the practical prevention steps that would make the biggest difference moving forward.
After the visit, the homeowner had a much clearer understanding of what was attracting mosquitoes to the property.
The goal was not just to reduce mosquito activity right away, but also to help lower the conditions that allow them to keep returning. Once the standing water sources, damp hiding areas, and heavy vegetation zones were addressed, the property had a much better chance of staying more comfortable through the summer.

Here are a few simple mosquito prevention tips I shared with the homeowner:
empty containers that collect water
keep gutters and downspouts draining properly
trim dense shrubs and overgrown grass
refresh bird baths and pet water often
reduce yard clutter where moisture can linger
pay attention to shaded, damp corners after rain
watch for low spots where water may sit longer than expected
Small changes like these can help a lot, especially when they are paired with the right professional service.

One thing I often tell homeowners is this: mosquitoes usually are a conditions problem as much as a pest problem.
If a yard has standing water, damp shade, and protected resting areas, mosquito activity can build up fast in June. Even if the problem seems minor at first, it usually becomes more noticeable once families start using the backyard more often.
That is why I always look beyond the bites themselves and focus on what is allowing the activity to continue.

If you are noticing mosquitoes every time you step into the yard, it is worth taking a closer look early.
In Kanata & Greater Ottawa, June is a common time for mosquito issues to show up around decks, gardens, shaded lawns, and drainage areas. The earlier you catch the conditions supporting the problem, the easier it is to improve the space.
If you want help figuring out what is attracting the activity, Wayne’s Pest Extermination is here to help.
