By August, spider calls around Kanata & Greater Ottawa often become more noticeable.
A homeowner in Kanata reached out after seeing more webs around the garage, basement windows and back deck. They were also noticing spiders in quiet corners inside the home, especially near storage areas and along the lower level.
When I arrived, I asked where the spiders were being seen most often. The homeowner mentioned the garage, basement, outdoor lights and the back entrance.
That gave me a good place to start.
With spiders, I always look at the areas where insects are gathering first. Spiders usually settle where there is shelter, low disturbance and a steady food source nearby.

The biggest concern with spiders is that they can keep returning when the conditions around the property are not addressed.
In this case, the home had spider activity around exterior lights, basement windows, garage corners and outdoor furniture. These areas were attracting small insects, which can make them more appealing for spiders.
The homeowner had been removing webs, but the webs kept coming back in the same places. That usually means the area is still supporting spider activity.
Spiders may show up around basements, garages, sheds, decks, exterior walls, windows, door frames, storage areas and other quiet spaces where they can build webs without being disturbed.

I started by walking the exterior of the home and checking the areas where the homeowner had noticed the most activity.
I looked around the garage, deck, window frames, exterior lights, basement entry points and lower foundation areas. I also checked quiet interior corners, storage zones and areas where spiders may be hiding.
Once I found the main activity areas, I explained what was likely attracting them and why the webs were returning.
From there, I recommended the right spider service and shared practical prevention steps to help reduce activity around the home.
After the visit, the homeowner had a much clearer understanding of why the spider activity was building up.
The goal was not just to remove webs. The goal was to reduce the conditions that were making those areas attractive to spiders in the first place.
Once the main activity zones were addressed, the homeowner felt more comfortable using the garage, basement and back deck again.

Here are a few spider prevention tips I shared with the homeowner:
Remove webs from corners, windows and exterior walls regularly.
Reduce clutter in garages, basements and storage areas.
Keep exterior lights off when not needed or switch to less insect-attracting lighting.
Seal small gaps around doors, windows and foundation areas.
Move firewood, boxes and stored items away from exterior walls.
Trim vegetation touching the home.
Clean around outdoor furniture, sheds and deck areas.
Watch for webs returning in the same spots.

One thing I often tell homeowners is this: spider activity is often connected to insect activity.
If a property has a lot of small insects around lights, windows, doors or exterior walls, spiders may follow. They are looking for food, shelter and quiet areas where they can build webs.
That is why spider control works best when we look beyond the spider itself.
We need to understand where they are hiding, what is attracting them and what areas around the home are allowing them to keep coming back.

If you are seeing spiders around your garage, basement, deck, shed, windows or exterior walls, it is worth taking a closer look.
In Kanata & Greater Ottawa, August is a common time for homeowners to notice more spider activity around quiet corners and outdoor spaces. The sooner the activity areas are reviewed, the easier it is to reduce the conditions that support the problem.
