What I Walked Into

In July, wasp calls around Kanata & Greater Ottawa usually become more common because nests are easier to notice by this point in the summer.

A homeowner in Kanata reached out after seeing wasps repeatedly flying near the back deck and up toward the roofline. At first, they thought the wasps were only passing through, but the activity kept happening in the same area every afternoon.

When I arrived, I asked where the activity was strongest. The homeowner pointed to the deck, the soffit area and a small gap near the exterior trim.

That gave me a good place to start.

With wasps, I always look for repeated flight patterns. If wasps keep returning to the same spot, there is often a nest, opening or protected area nearby. Health Canada also recommends checking yards and home surroundings in early summer for wasp activity or paper nests before the issue becomes harder to manage.

The Problem

The biggest concern with wasps is that activity can grow quickly when the nest is close to areas people use every day.

Once the active area was identified, I explained what I found to the homeowner and recommended the right service approach.

After the service, I shared what to watch for over the next few days and pointed out prevention steps that could help reduce future nesting around the same area.

The Outcome

The homeowner had a much clearer understanding of why the wasps kept returning to the same spot.

The goal was not only to deal with the visible activity, but also to identify the area that was supporting the problem. Once the source area was addressed, the homeowner felt more comfortable using the deck and backyard again.

That is why I always recommend having wasp activity checked early, especially when it is close to doors, patios, decks, garages or rooflines.
